The family believed in the power of education. It is normal in a middle class family in India that the boys should work and support the family as early as possible. But unlike many, he followed through with his dreams, even when the world tried to pull him back.

He was good in studies, so he excelled in academics and displayed a natural flair for science. His dream was to become a doctor and he was serious with it. He wanted to become a doctor because he felt that he can serve the society better with this profession. When the purpose is clear in mind, walking through road becomes easy.

A focused and determine effort by Parameshwara got him a seat at the prestigious Bangalore Medical College where he pursued his MBBS. He crossed many of the hurdles without complain. He faced extreme financial crisis and other constraints but he never compromised with his education. Sleepless nights, hours in the library, and part-time tutoring became his daily routine.

Finally the day came when he graduated as a medical doctor. It was a milestone that made his family proud and the nation hopeful.  But sometimes life catches you un-noticed. Such a painful moment came in the life of Parameshwara too. Life was going to test his inner strength, the steel within.

As a normal man, Parameshwara also battled with hopelessness, grief, and fear for days, weeks and even months. But we all have a spark within us, which just need a few puffs and it turns into flame. Parameshwara also had something deep within him refused to bow before destiny. His sight was lost, not the vision.

Parameshwara Decided To Join Civil Services

Dr. Parameshwara chose to fight and rise again rather perishing self in sorrow and dismay.

He decided to compete for IAS (Indian Administrative Services) exam. This is exam is one of the toughest exams in the world. This decision taken by a blind man will definitely put anyone in disbelieve. But only those write history, who dare. For Parameshwara, challenges weren’t roadblocks. They were just bumps on a long, meaning full road.

He knew his limitations, but the fire within not let him stop. It needs courage to even think about a person who couldn’t read a newspaper without help, preparing for one of the most competitive exams in the country. He studied using Braille books, audio recordings, and with the help of friends who read to him for hours.

Finally a blind person saw a rising sun. His stunning display of courage and brilliance, he cleared the IAS exam in 1999, becoming India’s first completely blind IAS officer. His success is just not hallmark of courage but a shine of hope for many like him and others.
